This weekend, the Glowing Heart team traveled roughly four and a half hours away to our first Disciple Now weekend in Dry Prong, Louisiana at New Prospect Baptist Church. We had a fun ride down with lots of laughs and bonding, but the most important part of our trip was when we were about thirty minutes away from the church. As a group, we each prayed for the students, asking God to just reveal through us and our material His love and strength. This year’s material is teaching on how to be a warrior for Christ, for everyday we are in a battle against the devil’s schemes.
On the first day, we had an awesome rally and the kids got to learn what the monkey dance was, a fun little way to break the ice and get ready for worship. “We’ve seen Him move mountains, we’ve seen him do incredible things, and we will see Him do it again.” The kids were clearly being touched by the lyrics of the songs because of the amount of movement they were showing as Glowing Heart played. Later on in our sessions, we talked about what exactly is happening when you accept Christ as your savior and the devil begins to attack you. As a warrior for Christ, we have to stand firm, be well equipped, and be well trained with our weaponary. As the devil attacks, we need to stand firm and know that there is nothing the Devil can do to you or take from you, unless God allows it. We must we well dressed in the armor of God, depicted in Ephesians 6:13-17, assuring that the devil’s attacks will fizzle out and fail. And finally we must be well trained in our weapons, for prayer and praise and hope and faith are how we stay close to our almighty God.
At recreational time, we played some fun games like three way soccer and blob tag. In three way soccer, there are three teams all going against each other, trying to knock over the other teams bucket. “Battles can not be won if we run away, we are meant to stand and win those battles.” In our game, if you were to not stand firm as a goalie, anybody could just come by and knock over your teams bucket. The same can be imagined in our fight for Christ. If we are not standing firm for our faith and learning about God daily, the devil can knock us down with things like doubt, anxiety, depression. Because of the devils daily schemes, we must not only stand firm in our faith, but continually grow and actively take the fight to Satan! Although the trials and tribulations of this world may seem scary, we must not fear it for we have God, and He has “overcome the world” (John 16:33).
Saturday nights at DNOWs are always the most exciting nights for everyone. These nights are where you usually see the most movement from God, as Henry preaches and prompts students to seek God if they do not have a relationship with Him already. On this particular Saturday, Henry was preaching out of Daniel, telling us about how faithful Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego were. About how despite even facing death, the three men maintained their faith and would not bow down to a false king. As he was finishing his sermon, Henry asked that all bow their head. He first asked us to give up anything we were struggling with to the Lord. Then he said “maybe you don’t have that relationship with Christ yet, and you’re longing for it. If that’s you, please stand.” The first student stood, but for the first time in the 30 years that Glowing Heart has been ministering, the student not only stood, but proclaimed “I want that relationship with Christ!” It was a beautiful, inspirational moment; those who were too scared to stand before, stood and proclaimed the same thing “I want that relationship with Christ!” The statement rang out five total times, as God gained five new children. We all rejoiced, each of us embracing another, everyone shedding many tears; imagine the rejoicing in heaven. “Likewise I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 16:10).
