Mount Pleasant 2/7-8/09
Road Tripping
by Aaron Masai
So I’ve never been to Tennessee before.
It took me long enough to learn how to spell it; never mind the length of the trip to get there. It was long alright, but I slept for most of it. It certainly didn't feel long; I did sleep most of the way. Waking periodically to find myself in a new state (I might have dreamt the Arkansas part) is not something I'm used to but is a thrilling prospect. I love road trips especially where there is good company to be had. Just something about finding myself in someplace new and different makes me excited.
But one could argue that it's all the same; rusty abandoned car from the 50's by the side of the interstate? Check. Animals by the side of the road? Double check. Trees, tress and more trees. Driving and driving, the road we followed out of Texas was same connected piece of gravel that lead us up to the steps of Southside Baptist Church.
So the trouble with perspective is that it can differ; it can change. And it can change with something like mood. Had I woken up in Memphis in a bad mood I might have concluded that it looked like Dallas and gone back to sleep. With something as fickle as feelings controlling one's view of the world, one would think that we'd be very careful how we wield our attitudes.
Not always true of course. How we view life, how we treat it, and how we interact with others (and how we influence their world-view!) are the result of the wildly apathetic and generally oblivious actions and words we use everyday. A different person might have disembarked from the van in Mount Pleasant had I decided to view the world as 'all the same' as opposed to 'fresh and new!'
O be careful little hands what you do. And be careful little mouth what you say! But most of all, be careful little mind what you think, for our actions flow from the mind!
A ton of pictures? Count them!
